5G - Airtel Signs $1-Billion Deal With Nokia

5G Netwrok, Airtel Nokia Deal - Finnish network equipment maker Nokia has secured multi-year $1-Billion contract to develop the platform for 5G connectivity fromBharti Airtel. The deal is valued at almost $1 billion (roughly Rs. 7,636 crores), will see Nokia deploy 300,000 new radio units across the country by 2022, boosting network capacity and preparing the ground for the move to next-generation 5G.


"This is an important agreement for the future of connectivity in one of the world's largest telecoms markets and solidifies our position in India," outgoing Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri said. 

India is the world's second largest telecoms market, which Nokia predicts will grow to 92 crores unique mobile customers within five years as online demand soars. India currently is the second-largest telecom market in the world and is expected to reach 920 million unique mobile customers by 2025, which will also include 88 million 5G connections according to the GSMA. 

The country is experiencing a massive increase in demand for data services with traffic increasing by 47 per cent in 2019 alone, according to Nokia’s MBiT Index 2020.
